Social Studies is the study of Humanities—exploring human culture, disciplines, philosophy, languages, and values—alongside Social Sciences, which focus on relationships within society and among individuals. It also includes History, examining the course of humanity, life, and Earth; Geography and Environmental Studies, which explore land, Earth sciences, and human interaction with the environment; and Economics and Politics, which study governments and businesses. In the Social Studies 10 curriculum at Palmer Secondary, students are expected to understand how global and regional conflicts have shaped the modern world and influenced identities, how politics impact the economic, social, ideological, and geographical aspects of life, and how diverse perspectives have contributed to the development of Canadian society. They also explore how historical injustices have created ongoing challenges to Canadian identities, especially regarding the history and discrimination faced by Indigenous Peoples. Students are expected to recognize the significance of key historical events and eras, find and use reliable research sources, evaluate the causes and consequences of actions, make ethical and informed judgments, and apply practical skills to interpret, communicate, and analyze ideas and findings.
